Videocon to set up manufacturing unit in Madurai

Videocon Mobile Phones, a part of the $6-billion Videocon group, is in the process of setting up mobile handset manufacturing plants in Hyderabad, Kolkata and Madurai, each with an investment of between Rs 40 crore and Rs 60 crore, said its chief executive officer Jerold Chagas Pereira.

Our future business strategies and manufacturing expansion plans are going to push ‘Make in India’ in a strategic manner. We have a strong presence in markets like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Now, our idea is to go deeper in Telangana, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal markets. The three new plants will go on stream during the August-December time frame, he told mediapersons.

Videocon, which entered the mobile phones business in 2010, currently has local manufacturing units at Aurangabad in Maharashtra and Kashipur in Uttarakhand, together with an installed capacity of 700,000 units a month. Post the expansion, the capacity would touch two million units per month, he said.

Stating that the mobile market in India had gone through a volatile phase in the last three months, impacting the sales primarily due to the change in duty structure, Pereira said now that the transition period was over, the company would aggressively focus on rolling out new models. While 35 per cent of components for Videocon’s feature phones are manufactured locally, the remaining parts are being imported.

Videocon has 28 feature phones and 12 smartphones in its portfolio, in the price range of Rs 1,000 to Rs 9,000. It is planning to launch at least four phones in the market every month. The company today launched its new range of handsets Z40 Lite+, Z45 Nova+, Z51 Nova, Z51 Nova+ and VA81M 3G-calling tablet. On how the mobile handset market is trending in India, Pereira said: I don’t think the feature phones segment will disappear. It has its own demand, especially in the rural markets. However, there is a rapid adoption of smartphones and it is where the market is shifting to.

Pereira said the company would be launching Z55 Dash, the first octa-core smartphone from its stable, next month. The new 5-inch HD handset, with 1GB RAM, an 8-MP rear camera and a 5-MP front facing one, and powered by a 2,200-mAh battery, will be priced between Rs 7,000 and Rs 7,500, he said, adding the company would start exporting its handsets to the West Asian market starting July this year.
